Training and skill development have been a focus of ALPA since the beginning with the goal to share the work and skills with Yolŋu and Aboriginal team members to develop them into supervisor and management roles.
In 1981 ALPA opened the Aboriginal Store Training School on Galiwin’ku. It was the first school of its kind and many Aboriginal staff would come from different communities to learn how to be retail workers and managers in their community stores.
In 1992, ALPA became a Registered Training Organisation, specialising in nationally accredited retail qualifications. The training we deliver expanded to include foundation skills, community services and a range of accredited and non-accredited work readiness programs to support remote Aboriginal people in work.
Over 1,800 of ALPA’s remote team members have completed apprenticeships or qualifications through ALPA. This dedication to quality training outcomes saw ALPA recognised as runner-up as Small Training Provider of the Year in the 2023 NT Training Awards. ALPA was also recognised as NT Large Employer of the Year in 2015 and 2016 and placed in the top three in the same category at the following two National Awards.
